Monthly recorder afternoons are generally held on the 3rd Sunday of the month at the homes of our members. Information is in each newsletter, and reminders are sent by email. Occasionally the date is changed where it clashes with a concert which EMSQ wishes to support. A Members’ Concert is usually held at the June meeting, where members perform for each other in an informal setting. Another is sometimes held in November as well, at the Society’s AGM.
Recorder afternoons will continue throughout 2020.
AGM and Members concert will be held 2pm on Sunday 17th November. This will be at Michael Yelland’s house, 48 McLean Parade, Ashgrove. Anyone wishing to perform in the members’ concert, please contact Yvette Friend.
Coming soon: Wendy Russell will be running workshops for school recorder teachers. We know that many school teachers have not had full training in music or recorder playing and have been asked to take on music when nobody else was available. Wendy will provide training in technique, repertoire and more. EMSQ will provide PD certificates on request for these workshops which should begin in February 2020.
Also in 2020: We will be running more mini-workshops on special topics with limited numbers. Patrice has already started this with a recent workshop on diminutions and a followup planned for 24/11. Members are invited to suggest topics for which there is a demand.
Brisbane Early Music Festival: This will be held at the Queensland Conservatorium (with great thanks for their generous assistance) from Monday 6 April to Easter Monday 13 April 2020. A special website is being created and will be linked to this page when it’s up. There will be 3 main workshops: winds (6-8), early strings (8-10) and viols/lutes/singers (10-12 April). Plus a chamber music/consort day on 13/4. There will be 2 harpsichord days – one for pianists as an introduction to early keyboard on 7/4, and one for harpsichordists on 9/4. Limited numbers for all workshops – 40 for the main workshops and 6 for the harpsichords. We have 18 of our tutors booked, including some of the best of Queensland’s talent with other luminaries from interstate and our special guest Brent Wissick from the US who will teach baroque cello and viols. More info including how to enrol coming soon.
