Early Music Society

This is a four-hour workshop for players of all low instruments (pitch A440.) Experience playing in an ensemble where the focus will be on the wonderful world of low instruments.

Designed for players of instruments pitched in the tenor and bass range, this workshop offers the opportunity to explore historical repertoire, performance practices and ensemble playing in a supportive and enjoyable environment. Suitable instruments include, but are not limited to, recorder from tenor down, cello and double bass stringed instruments, bassoon, bass clarinet, basset horn, trombone, tuba, sackbut etc. Participants should be reasonably confident players at intermediate level or above.

The workshop will be presented by musician and educator, Dr Michael O’Loghlin. Michael is a cello, double bass and viola da gamba player, and is a former member of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. He has played with most of the Australian symphony orchestras, as well as orchestras and specialist early music ensembles in Germany and Austria. He is a founding member of Brisbane’s ensemble for Baroque music on original instruments, the Badinerie Players, an examiner for AMEB and an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Queensland School of Music.

Michael’s book, Frederick the Great and His Musicians: the Viola da Gamba Music of the Berlin School was published in 2008 and reprinted in 2016. He currently teaches cello, double bass and viola da gamba from his studio in Brisbane.
